Hmmm. I am not sure what to think about this book. Started well. Then got lost in trying to advance through space and time. Lost me along the way, just before re-enchantment. Peculiar. I'd probably give 4 stars for the first part of the book and only 2 for the rest.

I'm writing this with still half an hour left on the audiobook but I'm checked out. Rating 1 star feels brutal because the fact is this was fine but I am just so bored and uninterested and unattached. When I first started it I actually was anticipating a highly-rated read but unfortunately it fell away from me far too quick. I think maybe if I'd read this physically I might have had a different experience and reaction but unfortunately the audiobook did nothing to elevate the material for me and I ended up just increasing the speed to get through it purely out of a stubborn desire to not dnf it. The concept and source material itself is incredibly interesting and alluring but the execution in the format I chose just didn't work for me personally.

Now when I think of Herne the Hunter all I can picture is breathless women unable to control themselves and throwing themselves at him, which is about as annoying as reading about it. I did around a third of the book in two minds, hoping it would pick up and the boddice ripping would stop but it carried on through the ages. The final section, by which time I had entirely lost interest and wanted to move on to something else, is set in the future and in a bid to sound futuristic the phrasing becomes stilted and then typeset into some kind of prose poem which is what we will all be doing in 2073. Giving this two stars as the writer is clearly capable of good writing, but not for me.

This is a bit of an unenthusiastic three star, slightly over the halfway point I found this to be a bit of a struggle.
Having said that there were plenty of gorgeous moments but you know you're having a hard time with with a book when the audiobook also feels like a drag.

A variety of writing styles throughout, some more challenging than others. Quite an interesting and intriguing experience overall!
