My copy of this is a family hand-me-down, and I loved seeing my granddad's annotations and underlinings throughout. A beautiful biography -- well-written especially in its preservation of Chambers as a human no less than a hero.

A solid 4.5 stars. If you're interested in reading a biography of a godly, brilliant theologian, then check this book out.
It's heartbreaking that he died so young (from something as silly as appendicitis). But praise God he fell in love with Biddy who was a talented stenographer and kept notes of his talks/sermons. Without her devotion and skill, we wouldn't have a fraction of the materials we do.
I was struck by his 'dark night of the soul' phase. And I love the epiphany he had coming out of that struggle, realizing he was searching for the wrong kind of experience.
I was also impressed by his commentary on the Holiness movement. It would have been so easy to get swept up in the surface emotion of it (with people looking excited and full of spirit)... but Oswald wisely celebrated the best evidence of the Spirit in those meetings, which was that individuals were understanding the Gospel message. The Holy Spirit was helping to illuminate the truth.
If you're ready for some thoughtful and challenging theology then sure, start with Oswald Chambers daily devotional which is called My Utmost for His Highest... but then, explore his other works because they're all great.

Absolutely brilliant biography on the life of Oswald & Biddy Chambers, a family who lived their utmost for the Almighty God's highest. They preached what they practiced. What a way to live- spend and be spent for their honourable High King's service. The biographer has taken us through the instances of Oswald's & Biddy's life. He has also taken excerpts from O.C.'s diary, prayer journal, writings. A collection of photographs & O.C's poetry is given as well. A must read biography for every Christian!!

I've read and been blessed by My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers, but I never knew much of his life other than that he was a Bible teacher. This is a fascinating and well-written biography about his life which also shows how the woman who stood beside him as his wife had a vital part in his ministry. Oswald Chambers went through a time of deep depression and struggle with God from which he emerged stronger. At the end of that time, he had what he described as a baptism of the Holy Ghost. He gave himself fully to God at that point and it seems that his struggle with depression was then a thing of the past. His wife, whom he nick-named Biddy, was a stenographer and trained secretary. She took short-hand notes of all of his messages and lectures. After his death as a fairly young man (only in his 40's), she made it her life work to type out all of his messages and lectures and to turn them into books. The most famous, of course, is My Utmost for His Highest. This was also the most difficult to compile as she took bits from many different messages and compiled them around a common theme for the day. Now that I know the story behind My Utmost for His Highest, a book that I've read through many times before, has become even more dear to me.

This was one school assignment that I actually enjoyed! Oswald Chambers was the author of "My Utmost for His Highest". He ministered to the troops stationed in Africa during WWI. It's amazing to see how he spent himself for those men. If you look at the before and after pictures (before he went to Africa and after he'd been there a while) it's amazing how much he aged! It's been over 10 years since I read it, and I can still remember.
