I honestly really enjoyed this book, I liked the way it had different character perspectives as "chapters"
Adams death situation really got me though I was like damn Toni hold up stop trying to choke me
I also really liked Booker and Adams "relationship" when Queen was telling him how he tortured himself over Adams death

Lots of lines I had to write down that I really loved too

Surprisingly? I feel bad for Sweetness like usually people make a character like that you absolutely hate because of course you do but Morrison did it in a way that had me feeling bad like she wasnt a good mother in the slightest and she "deserves" her situation but personally you kinda wish her and Bride couldve had a decent relationship

Lastly
I kinda thought that woman might've been innocent but I still wasn't expecting it? Like I thought maybe she didn't really see anything but then she was like I wanted my mother to hold my hand and I was like dang an even better reasoning and outcome than I thought

The prose is a feast, and while the content was sometimes hard to read because of its nature, I was moved by so many of the lessons that Morrison provides here.

So it's come down to this huh. My last Toni Morrison fiction. This is heartbreaking. I liked the book; it's heartbreaking I have no more novels! But it does mean I can reread them for the first time now!

It's not her best work, but it's not her worst either. A breeze to read as usual. It hooked me more towards the end, or more than halfway through the book, which isn't good while reading but the parts before that were pleasant enough I didn't look at the book negatively. I'm sure it wasn't her intention but it is a little sad she didn't go out with a bang. This book is fine. I love Black love, and that was her primary love through all her books in all its different forms. All her books are about love! 🫶🏾

Please take the trigger warnings seriously

I agree with others that it’s not on par with her best work even if the prose is still there. But also the book reminded how I really think Morrison’s work should be considered magical realism.

Leaving this unrated because I think Toni Morrison absolutely did what she intended to do and did it well. The embodiment and lasting effects of childhood trauma and sexual assault is a lot to handle which is why I don’t know if I can say I enjoyed the reading experience or would recommend it to people. Great book but definitely unsettling. CHECK CONTENT WARNINGS
