My favorite manga series when I was a teen. Something about Yotsuba’s childlike wonder brings me so much joy every time I reread this series.

I really love Yotsuba! and have given a more detailed review of the series in my comments on Volume 13.
I am glad I stuck with this series because Volume 1 is probably the least satisfying of the entire series for me. The premise of how Yotsuba came to live with Mr Koiwai is strange, outlandish and seems somewhat unnecessary. Why can't Mr Koiwai just be cast has Yotsuba's biological dad? Perhaps there is a cultural reason that eluded me. Yotsuba was described as foreign, possibly alien (!?) in order to justify her naiveté about city life - however this story arc petered out pretty quickly (which is just as well).
If you can ignore the weird elements in the back story then you can simply enjoy Yotsuba as a charming story about a father-and-daughter relationship, and a joyous little girl who loves to live every day to the full.

Painfully cute and kind of exhausting. It reminded me of this time that I lived in an apartment complex when a little girl, maybe a few years older than Yotsuba, started thinking of me as a "big sister" (I was 19 or 20) and always came over to play. This was very endearing and I was very flattered but sometimes I would pretend I was not home because entertaining energetic little kids is a "sometimes" activity for me.
I'm still going to read more of this, though I'll have to space it out with other things.

I regularly see this pop up in my lists of best manga of all time. Now that I have read the first volume I get it.
Its an extremely cute series, with a likable and personable cast. Yotsuba herself is a combo of weird, adorable, and funny. Her family and neighbors help inject some different perspectives and people into the story.
Overall, this is just a gentle story about a curious young child, and he wandering around a new city.
Its a great break from all the fantasy and science fiction I have been reading lately.
