Τα ιστορικά ρομάντζα των Εκδόσεων Elxis είναι ότι πρέπει τώρα το καλοκαιράκι! Είτε είσαι στην παραλία, είτε χαλαρώνεις στο μπαλκόνι του σπιτιού σου μετά από μια μέρα γεμάτη δουλειά, παίρνεις στα χέρια σου ένα Elxis και αφήνεσαι σε κάτι που δεν απαιτεί πολλά από εσένα, αλλά αντίθετα σου δίνει λίγες στιγμές χαλάρωσης και ηρεμίας μέσα στη μέρα.

Η Μίλισαντ Κρίσπιν είναι ένα κορίτσι που έχει μάθει να κάνει αυτό που θέλει χωρίς να μπορεί κανείς να τη συμμορφώσει στα πρέπει της κοινωνίας, αλλά παρακινούμενη από τα δικά της και μόνο θέλω. Σε όλο αυτό συνέβαλλε και το γεγονός ότι η μητέρα της πέθανε όταν η Μίλισαντ και η αδερφή της η Τζόαν ήταν μικρές. Ο θάνατος της μητέρας τους κατέβαλε τον πατέρα των κοριτσιών, Νάιτζελ Κρίσπιν, μιας και ο έρωτάς του για τη γυναίκα του ήταν αληθινός και η αγάπη τους βαθιά. Έτσι άρχισε να πίνει και πέρναγε πολύ καιρό με μυαλό θολωμένο, με αποτέλεσμα να μην μπορεί να δώσει στις κόρες του τη διαπαιδαγώγηση που θα ήθελε. Είχε όμως ήδη αρραβωνιάσει τη Μίλισαντ με το γιο του καλύτερού του φίλου, από τη μέρα της γέννησής τους.

Τα δυο παιδιά συναντήθηκαν μόνο μια φορά, κατά την οποία αποκόμισε ο καθένας τις χειρότερες εντυπώσεις από τον άλλο. Από τότε ο Γούλφρικ ντε Θορπ, μελλοντικός κόμης του Σέφορντ, απέφευγε όσο πιο πολύ μπορούσε τη μνηστή του. Σαν ιππότης, υπηρέτησε το βασιλιά του σε πολλούς πολέμους, καθυστερώντας έτσι το γάμο του με ένα ατίθασο πλάσμα, όμως αν τον καθυστερήσει λίγο ακόμα, θα φανεί προσβλητικό και δε θα ήθελε ποτέ να φέρει σε δύσκολη θέση τον πατέρα του. Άλλωστε, έχουν περάσει πλέον τόσα χρόνια από εκείνη τη μία και μοναδική συνάντηση και έχει την ελπίδα πως η μέλλουσα γυναίκα του θα έχει αλλάξει προς το καλύτερο.

Κι ενώ δεν είναι πολύ χαρούμενος με αυτό το γάμο, τα αισθήματά του αλλάζουν σιγά σιγά και όσο περισσότερο γνωρίζει τη Μίλισαντ. Εκείνη όμως ψάχνει απελπισμένα ένα τρόπο να ακυρώσει τη συμφωνία και το γάμο που βλέπει να πλησιάζει. Πρέπει όμως να βρει ένα τρόπο που να μην προκαλέσει δυσάρεστες συνέπειες στην οικογένειά της. Την ίδια στιγμή, είναι και άλλοι που δεν επιθυμούν να γίνει αυτός ο γάμος και με κάποιο τρόπο εμπλέκεται ακόμη και ο Βασιλιάς της Αγγλίας, ενώ η ζωή της Μίλισαντ βρίσκεται σε κίνδυνο. Το ερώτημα είναι αν τελικά οι δύο νέοι θα καταφέρουν να βρουν την ευτυχία.

Αγγλική ύπαιθρος κάπου στο μεσαίωνα. Κάστρα, ιππότες, άνθρωποι με τιμή που πολεμούν για αυτή και προτιμούν να πεθάνουν γενναίοι. Ότι καλύτερο για να μεταφερθείς σε μια άλλη εποχή, όπου κυριαρχεί ο ρομαντισμός και οι ιππότες πάνω στα άλογα. Ένας γενναίος ιππότης που θέλει και προσπαθεί να προστατεύσει μια γυναίκα, πόσο μάλλον τη μνηστή του. Και μια γυναίκα που δεν μπορεί να συμφωνήσει με τις επιταγές της εποχής, που λένε ότι οι άντρες έχουν ισχύ πάνω στις γυναίκες τους.

Ευχάριστο και χαλαρό! Η καλύτερη παρέα για την παραλία!

What can I say, it was exactly what you would expect. Corny, predictable, and kind of enjoyable. At times I felt like an extreme old lady reading the book... then again this book was really just The Tudors in written form. Did j enjoy it? Sure. Would I look to read her work again? I kind of doubt it...

It's been a long time since I read a Johanna Lindsay book. I did read a great many of her books throughout the eighties and into the early nineties, by which time I had started to really notice some of her standard plot tricks and the patterns she employs in almost every story and I started to get fed up with some of the astoundingly implausible premises she sometimes employs, and I moved away from Lindsay books.

Lately, though, I've been craving a bit of good, old-fashioned, historical romance, and here we are.

As usual, Lindsay's historical setting is well-researched and interesting, and it's communicated effectively (although it's a bit heavy on the explanatory dialogue; I know she prefers dialogue to exposition, but some of the conversations struck me as far too expository and therefore awkward). The characters are pretty much bog standard Lindsay, which is okay (I knew what I was getting into, after all). The heroine is young, sassy, strong-willed, and the hero is a big, strong alpha male, and the heroine, despite her years of outright rebellion and socially inappropriate behaviour, is, ultimately, tamed by love and all is well. Before we get tot that ending, of course, there are plot twists (any Lindsay fan will see them coming) and misunderstandings that cause friction and stress but which could have been cleared up with just one decent conversation between the protagonists (another classic Lindsay plot device).

The love scenes were less graphic than I remembered her writing being. Either Lindsay has toned down her style or I've gotten used to reading graphic erotica, but I found them fairly tame and not very explicit. I'd have to go back to earlier books to see if she has actually changed or if I just remember it differently, but she's been writing for a lot of years and I think I just must have perceived things differently way back in the day.

I would call this book predictable, engaging, and very typically Johanna Lindsay, with all the standard plot devices she normally uses. I was not surprised at all by the story, but you know what? I didn't especially want to be. It was everything I expected, and it was exactly what I wanted: historical romance, borderline bodice-ripper (it's not quite a bodice-ripper, though), dominant alpha male and feisty heroine who is tamed by his love.

When you pick up a Johanna Lindsay novel, you know what you're getting. This book did not fail to deliver exactly that. For me, it's kind of comfort-food-brain-candy, and in that capacity, it is perfect.

I was so annoyed by the female protag, but I did read the whole book. She was so stubborn, a bit selfish and beyond listening to anyone. She held on to her childhood grudge for a long time. Liked the hero. Not sure if the sister has a book of her own but I would like to read that.

• Millisent dressing as a boy was a very interesting aspect and her ability to get along with animals was cute but ended up losing significance for the plot as the story progressed.
• Wulfric was okay, I don't have a lot of thoughts about him other than I disliked that he wanted to order his wife about, but then this is a rather realistic historical romance.
• I loooved getting a glimpse of Reina and Ranulf! Their second son Ronald is good friends with Milli and Ranulf is a vassal to Wulfric's father Guy de Thorpe.
• I still liked the writing, it was adequately historical.

I loved this book a lot lot more than the first Sheffords Knights book. Milisant is such a good character, as is Wulfric. I love their sparks together from the very beginning. The whole story line in this book was better and it keeps you in suspense. From early on in the book when Mili is so difficult and putting up a struggle to everything Wulfric does, that was amusing. It was quite sad to find out why exactly it was that Milisant hated Wulfric so (because of her bird) but I like how she has a way with all animals - something I have in common with her :) When the King made advances on Milisant I was really shocked, but not so much as panicked when someone knocked out Wulfric and took Milisant captive. A bit I loved though was when Milisant ran away and went to Ranulf and Reina's castle to be with their son, and although nothing actually happened, Wulfric went mental which I found very possessive and sweet. All in all, I did really like this book.
