A truly interesting concept that unfortunately feels unfulfilled. The critiques that this book levies at Japanese society are valid but ultimately come off as lightweight. This thing needs more bite.

I've obviously been enjoying Japanese feminist literature this year, and this was another great novel that demonstrated the difference in treatment women receive when they are pregnant compared to when they are not. As if women are valued more once they are fulfilling the patriarchy's ideal role and job for them. Yet at the same time, fathers are not expected to put in as much work as mothers. What a world lol

If you're looking for a short read or an introduction into Japanese literature or feminist literature, this is a great book!
