Going to preface this review by saying that I love extreme horror that is heavy on sexual violence, an I love books that make me feel disturbed & disgusted, so none of that is the reason for my low rating. This is a book that could have been right up my alley with combining sexual & religious horror.

Unfortunately a significant amount of the horror in this book is based on people with congenital deformities, disabilities, etc, merely existing. Some of the conditions described in this book are, at least as far as I could tell from brief research, made up entirely, but some are very real, or at least based in reality & heavily exaggerated. The narrative itself is extremely cruel to these characters, not just in terms of what happens to them, which I wouldn’t have an issue with since it’s a horror novel, but in terms of how they are depicted, described, and framed in comparison to other characters. Their conditions are treated as making them evil monsters. Phrases like “the mistake” are used as epithets in place of a name/pronoun/“the man”/etc. Their bodies are described in gratuitous detail the way extreme horror writers tend to when describing a monster or action intended to disturb & disgust. I kept getting the impression that these characters are supposed to be seen as more horrifying than the actual villain. The disabled characters are seldom portrayed with any sympathy, even when they’re being brutally raped or killed. There is also a pair of (extremely unrealistic) intersex characters who are treated similarly while also being fetishized. Fat characters only appear (at least that I noticed) as “monsters” and their fatness is emphasized with clear intention to disgust.

That said, aside from that extremely glaring issue, the basic premise is very interesting, and while I do think it could have been handled with more depth, there were parts of this book I enjoyed.
I really liked the concept of the drug used to make people into rapists, and the design of the (non-human) monster that appears at the end was fun. I wish there had been more action with that creature, perhaps having it rape one of the main characters. As it is it felt a bit rushed at the end, which made it feel a bit anticlimactic despite all the drama happening at that point.
The writing is okay, and decent by extreme horror standards, although I did notice quite a few typos & there were some strange word choices at times. I could have really liked this book if it wasn’t so determined to depict disabled people as subhuman.

Rating 3 out of 5 | B+; Dear sweet Lord! I need to bleach my brain

Warning; Graphical descriptions of perversion, depravity, blasphemy & sodomy. Not meant for light hearted reading

An eccentric billionaire, with the wealth, resources and drive to find God, sets out to do so; damn the consequences. For said purpose, he collects all manner of mutant abominable victimized members of human society, and keeps them in his own version of a house of horrors. He then kidnaps spiritual leaders from various religions & sects, and after drugging them up into sex crazed frenzy, pairs them up with the aforementioned mutated individuals, forcing them to commit heinous, blasphemous, downright depraved acts of sexual perversion. All in a bid to offend God & force him to appear before him.

What the hell did I just read, Seriously! Don't ever pick up this book, unless you have a strong stomach & are desensitized to depravity of the extreme kind. I was barely five pages into the book, and what was written had already made me uncomfortable. And I consider myself to be a veteran of the type of aberrations that inhabit the dark corners of the Internet. (I'm sure there are some people out there, who've experienced things just as troubled in real life, but let us restrict the discussion to the written word)

While at no point was I so disgusted to emanate a physical reaction, I was nonetheless glad there was no one near me, to see the shades that my emotions were jumping around in. Definitely not something you read in a café, or around people in general.

The very first chapter is, imagine the hospital scene in Kill Bill Vol.1, right after the Bride wakes up, and all the things which she was subjected to while in a coma. Now take that, and elevate it (rather denigrate it) to Hell raiser level of sexual depravity, minus the supernatural elements. Then you can begin to imagine the tone of the story.

I mean, while reading it, I was literally ticking off tags from Porn hub in my mind. And let me tell you folks, it's nothing like what the internet presents it to you. The whole story is like a macabre show of gore, bodily fluids & acts of perversion spun into a grotesque display, it's like a car crash, one which disgusts you, but you can't look away from, because it intrigues you just as much. Even though you might be loathe to admit it.

The plot of the story, centered largely around this sexual deviant Billionaire, who is for all intents and purposes an immensely successful, attractive, genetically gifted specimen. But he has this want, or lacking in him, a desire which cannot be filled. Committing acts of extreme depravity merely seems to tickle at his true desire. The more abominable, deviant, depraved and horrifyingly nauseating the act performed, and the more unnatural a partner he performs it, is what is required to make him feel any form of pleasure.

In his twisted, malformed, psychopathic mind, he needs to confront God, whatever be its form or origin, to see the being in whose image humanity was crafted. He wants to view that perfect existence, and having experienced it, wants to elevate himself, shedding the shackles of the moral world and humanity.

The means by which he intends to go about it? By performing & orchestrating incredible acts of blasphemy & sodomy, to shock God so much, that he is forced to show himself. With the resources at his disposal, unfettered by law or society, and having not a shred of morality, empathy or kindness, he views the whole world as his playground, and the people inhabiting it, as pawns to be used to further his hedonistic agenda. He doesn't care what manner of suffering & misery he ends up creating, so long as his goals are met. (Yet another reason, as to while Billionaires are not going to save our world)

*I’m not going to give you the ‘what this book is about’ blurb – you can read that elsewhere.

1. I had a friend tell me this book was too much for them, so of course, I had to dive right in. Seriously, I ordered it from Amazon immediately after that conversation. I’ve read quite a bit of Lee this year, so I knew what I was getting into, but I did still have a small gag reaction pretty quickly in the 1st chapter. It’s what Lee does.
2. If you’ve read Lee and White both – it’s pretty apparent who wrote what (at least I *think* it is), so if you’re hoping for a seamless meshing of styles, this is not it. But if you’re looking for good f-ed up fun from 2 awesome authors that may also tickle your gag reflex, this is it.
3. Religious horror will always be one of my favorite sub-genres…tropes…whatever. This is a different take on it than I’ve read before, and it was highly enjoyable. I especially loved how broad of a brush the authors painted with when crapping on religion. *NOT faith, mind you, organized religion – there is a difference.

I am really struggling with how to rate these extreme horror books, I gave this one four stars because it had me gagging so often, and that rarely happens. I also felt my own jaw literally dropped as I read some of these scenes. I don't think that gross really covers it, but it's a good start. It's incredibly demented, and I could have done without the whole God thing, but I understand why it was there so I'm not going to knock it for that. However, the sexual abuse is above and beyond, and I don't want to spoil it just know that if you're sensitive to sexual abuse regularly this is not the tip of the iceberg it's all of the stuff that comes after. do not jump into this book without having an understanding of extreme horror, and you might want to warm up with another Edward Lee's or Wrath James White's books, and maybe even step down to another that doesn't need so much warning. I will say I was surprised, grossed out, and it managed to make me feel a little physically ill, and in my mind that's pretty solid content, if it can cause visceral reactions.

Ugh. Well written, with a good angle it takes at the end of the novel, but ultimately doesn't do its own premise any favours. With a great concept - guy trying to be so fucked up it pisses off god - it seems to just want to gross out the reader, bragging "look at me I'm a gross book isn't this so yucky" which gets old quickly. As well, the description of people with birth differences (the deformed, defective, monsters, etc. whatever the book wants to call them) seems to vilify them as though it is through some fault of theirs, or some divine retribution, that they should look the way they do, which is ultimately a bit of a let down, and a bit gross honestly. At times, it feels like we're meant to be finding these people more "disgusting" than our villain, which again, it's just gross, and feels like the authors have never met anyone with a genetic difference in their lives, and clearly think that no one with this conditions would ever be reading. Ugh

Two stars because yes, it is a good premise, and yes, it's not horribly written, and the journalist and photographer character are well done.
