buddy read with my girl Macy!
WHAT.
this book gets an extra star just for THAT ENDING! omg Akemi Dawn Bowman better pay for my hospital bills after the heart attack i received during those last 60 pages… i was no prepared, and i demand immediate answers in the form of book #2!!
The Infinity Courts was so much better than i expected, and i loved every minute of reading this book. i was obsessed and sucked in from the very first page, and bowman’s writing is absolutely brilliant! the concept is unique, the characters were lifelike - i have no complaints. the MC was beautifully written in the way that she wasn’t perfect and she sometimes made mistakes, and i really loved that.
overall, i’m just so glad i read this, and i can’t wait for the rest of the series!!

An interesting take on what happens when we die; honestly I wasn’t expecting that. The integration and power of Artificial Intelligence with the philosophical topic of afterlife was fun to experience. I wish the character development was a bit stronger for protagonist, Nami. But overall, I enjoyed this read!

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read an ARC of this amazing YA fantasy!
I absolutely loved The Infinity Courts! The main character, Nami, is murdered at the beginning of the book, and then she finds herself in an afterlife world called Infinity, which has been taken over by a sentient AI. She finds a group of other humans who are fighting to take back Infinity from the AI, and she joins their fight. I absolutely loved Nami's character, and I felt like the author made some extremely bold choices, such as starting the book with the Nami's death, that made the book truly interesting and fresh. I also really loved the worldbuilding, especially the descriptions of the Four Courts and their purpose. The character development is also fantastic, and I love that Nami is able to stay hopeful throughout the book even though she is, quite literally, dead. I didn't see the plot twists at the end coming at all, which is extremely rare for me in YA fantasy these days, since I feel like there are several tropes that occur over and over. I love that The Infinity Courts breaks the mold of YA fantasy and tells a completely new story.
Highly recommend!!

Gas gas gas. Got me back into reading and was a good kind of fast-paced. Makes you really think about what makes humans really human and to what point should we give up hope in said humanity. The MC could be a bit annoying and unrealistically naive at times but I really liked her character and development overall. I wish this book leaned a little more sci-fi-y and less fantasy with the whole 4 courts system since it does deal with AIs and stuff. It would make the themes and main conflict hit even harder that way, but the royalty aesthetic was off the charts tho. The setting was kind of a mix of sci-fi, 2014 dystopian, and royalty fantasyish which made it a bit jumbled but that’s whatever.

Really loved another book by this author so I was bummed about this one. I really was pulled in at the beginning, but it grew boring and repetitive.

Thank you to NetGalley for the eARC!
This book is about what happens when we create artificial intelligence who doesn’t like being a slave so they take over the afterlife. Intriguing right?!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book!
Not only is is really well written but the world building was equally rich and unique. It starts out like your usual contemporary and even though I’m not the biggest fan I was quite engaged in those first few chapters. Then after our main character dies and is thrust into the afterlife, well that’s where everything got fantastical. Think world building that feels like Holly Black’s Faerie but has super powers if only you can separate tour mind from its limitations to manipulate things.;
I seriously whipped through the first 150 pages because I was so addicted, and the plot only got more intriguing. Then that finale, just wow. I had theories of what was going to happen, but nope. Those were all blown out of the water and now I wonder how I didn’t see the signs initially because there are subtle hints at things, it’s just that Akemi does such a great job with red herrings that you don’t see the actual clues.
Much of the book is centered around doing what is right and figuring out what makes someone human, especially when you’re dead, are you still human?
I can’t wait to read what is goin to happen next in this series!

I so almost gave this 3 stars! Not because it was terrible but because of the main character!
She is fresh into death so I understand her feelings towards it but she was so adamant about making it a safe place for her sister to be welcomed into that it seemed like she didn’t actually accept her death.
Throughout the book she is constantly trying to convince everyone that the Residents (A.I) can’t be all that bad and they can coexist and all other characters around her disagreed. At one point I even believed that she was just caving to their whims so she didn’t get kicked out but was still defying them 100% because she couldn’t give up on her sisters afterlife. She is still very much alive but all she can think about is when her sister dies.
My biggest problem was the “romance”. The relationship she had with Gil was volatile at worst and indifferent at best but yet she had feelings for him the entire time he was mean to her. Not a school yard bully either. He seemed to truly hate her and I saw no connection.
This book has a slight "The Host" and "Divergent" kind of feel to it and it is fairly pop culture centered as well.
But you gave this 4 stars, you ask? Well... while I was having these issues, that ending made up for it almost tenfold. Everything makes sense in the end, right?
