I just can't get into Louise Penny. I find the townspeople smug and annoying rather than charming

The hero just didn't sound like a guy to me. You can make a male character romantic and gentle and unconventional and have him still sound like a dude. This was. . . not that. Just not a book for me, which is a shame b/c I love the premise.
