Every now and then after reading a heavy, dark novel you just need to read a nonsensical bit of fun. That’s what The Importance of Being Earnest is. It’s a farcical, comical play about the upper class of late 19th century england; a satire on their shallowness, hypocrisy, and social snobbery. But most of all it’s a fun poke at society and that’s my favorite kind of novels.

I understand why people don’t like this book. It is dark and it is heavy handed with symbolism and themes we were forced to study in high school. But for me those are what made the work enjoyable. And I appreciated the true character Hester showed throughout the novel. From refusing to name her co-sinner to facing down her former husband to planning an escape, she showed strength and resilience.
