The Catcher in the Rye is to American males as Reagan is to Republicans. It is the default answer to the question, "What is your favorite book?" I'll never understand why this novel is the quintessential coming-of-age story for the American man.

I'll admit that I am not the biggest Rand fan, but I do admire her writing. Her real-world political views, though, do offend and annoy me at times. That said, in The Fountainhead, I find the characters admirable in the convictions when acting individually; their interactions, however, create pairings that are odious and simply unlikeable.
