he understood there was nothing in the world more valuable than a sincere heart.

I have no words besides: And they say romance is dead.

This was 'posed to be a nice quick break between books... I didn't expect the characters to be so heavily relatable and heartbreaking at times. I adored the trans rep in the story,
It isn't common to see trans characters who don't want to have hormone therapy done, so it felt good to be represented!
. The LI's fears hit a little too close to home for me... However, the book ends on a positive note for both characters! I'd def recommend it to anyone who enjoys online chatrooms, BDSM themes, and trans characters.

It is important to appreciate beauty, even when it is evil.

I'm unsure if I'll keep my rating the same, but I just want to say that the summary for the book doesn't really match the reading experience.
The "power struggle" with her cousins is not a huge part of this book imo. Especially if you thought the political machinations were going to be similar to other political fantasy novels.
The romantic relationship that forms between the MC and her love interest isn't believable to me. Because of circumstances, you have to sift through so many layers of the LI that by the time you figure out his true nature/personality, it feels like the book is damn near over.

Now onto the things I enjoyed. I liked seeing how even early on, Jemisin played around with POV. I liked how it felt like I needed to get to the very end of the book to fully understand where things were going. The writing kept me engaged from the first page, especially by 30% when things felt like they sped up a bit more. The setting of Sky itself was incredibly interesting with its presentation as a pristine building that contradicts the happenings going on within it. I also really adored Sieh and Yeine, both as characters, and their relationship with one another which was incredibly sweet.

I liked that the novel touched on colonialism, however things felt a little too on the nose for me. I probably would've thought the book was better if I hadn't read a bit of Fifth Season way before. I'd recommend people to start there first because the author has truly improved since this debut!

P.S. For any of my fellow sexual trauma survivors, there is a scene where
the characters very casually discuss the rape of the mc that triggered me, so if you might be sensitive to this, I'd recommend skipping this one or just being cautious.

We cannot change the past. All we can do is protect others and allow them the chance for the happiness that we'll never have.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this. The story has a way of grabbing your attention through Bruce's internal monologue as he thinks about his role as a hero in Gotham. I liked how Bruce confronting his "inner demons" was portrayed through the illustrations via a large, domineering, and grotesque silhouette of his alter ego. This allows him to not escape the much-needed confrontation of self.
Witnessing Bruce come to terms with the conflict within himself resulting from the trauma of losing his parents and the guilt of people dying on his watch as a vigilante tied into his no kill rule poetically and believably. Batman's rule of not killing is an important aspect that makes regular civilians feel safe enough to trust him. Most importantly, it allows him to trust himself. It's a promise to himself as a kid who witnessed the murder of his family in front of his eyes.

Did not finish book. Stopped at 22%.
The writing was repetitive; I'd liken it to running on a treadmill, in which you just aren't going anywhere. It felt like (especially in the prologue) that the same thing was being said slightly differently the entire time.

The smut in the first chapter was not even good and the writing gave CW show and not in an entertaining TVD way. Because the whole,
"How I remembered I didn't know. It just seemed to be a part of me..."
was corny asf to me.

Not only that but how the mc and the ml interacted was giving fake mad because
"I'm going to fucking kill him"
being on Ernest's mind after all the ml did was help him was so forced to me. Especially with the context of
Killian telling him not to leave because Ernest turned into a mer in front of everybody and was going to be killed by his own father's guards. Not to mention that Ernest was thinking that as Killian was addressing the wound on his arm? BYE.

This is my first book from this author and I really wanted to like it because I adore the concept of queer mermaid stories but this was not it for me. However, my fingers are crossed in the hopes that I'll enjoy their other works more.
