It's Laura Ingalls, what more is there to say? I am reading this series to my children as bedtime books. There are a few things that are a bit brutal (ending the chapter on a story about children freezing to death), but that was her life. My husband has never read the books and is also enjoying hearing the stories each night. My son already wants to live a pioneer life, it reminds me of my dreaming to be Laura when I was younger.

Something I realized for the first time in all the times I've read this - As many times as Pa kept talking about how the wheat crop was going to pay for everything, you just know that something is going to happen to the wheat. Just goes to show, don't count your chickens. Or your wheat crop.
Anyway, this one was kind of intense. The conflict in the last book was all human-caused (government land vs. Native American land), but this one had problems that were all caused by nature. Grasshoppers, blizzards, rising creeks - none of that is particularly fun. As much as the Little House books have a reputation for being sweet, comfortable reads, some scary things actually happened to the Ingalls family. The illustration of Laura in the rushing creek and holding on to the plank and almost getting carried off by the water - that has always freaked me out, even just a little bit.

3.5 stars. The detail in these books is bringing me right back to what I loved so much about them growing up - especially everything about the Ingalls' trips to town, including Laura's feud with Nellie Oleson.

I just can’t believe how many bad decisions Pa makes in this book. And Laura is so naughty! It is one of my favorites though.

CW: bullying, child abuse, racism, leeches, insect infestation
This is the first Little House book I didn't read or start reading when I was little so it was all new to me. Things in this book really stressed me out, but then I am also stressing from real life stuff at the moment.
