She had some good points, and although I do believe mental health affects physical health and that we are more powerful that we realize, she took it to too much of an extreme for me. At times it felt like she was gaslighting anyone with a disease or any type of physical issue (apparently gray hair is one). I don’t believe we create physical problems with our thought patterns, I think our attitude can help or hurt us but there are also environmental, societal, political and genetic/biological factors outside of our control as well. I found myself skimming over a lot of the book as it felt dismissive of people’s experiences and struggles and a bit like a guilt trip especially as someone who was recently diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. The affirmations in general were nice but I was disappointed with this book.

Couldn’t get through the first chapter. The pseudoscience and thinly veiled victim blaming was appalling. Negative thoughts creating cancer, arthritis and baldness? Get me outta here.

Finally read this book. It's been on my shelf for a year. Many people told me about it. It's so wonderful. Especially if you are struggling with anything in your life at the moment which we all are. Definitely a book you will continue to go back to. Just saying to yourself a simple affirmation "I am willing to learn to change" as a begining, will have a profound effect. Thank you Louise Hay

I was put off by the first chapter of the book but persisted and am glad I did. I found a number of good suggestions for helping myself that I'll work on using. I also found Louise Hay's life story at the end amazing.

I don’t appreciate endlessly hopeful manifestations. And I definitely dislike the idea that you invite the bad things that happen in life. But I can take what I liked and let go of some of the author’s beliefs. I wanted to better understand the root causes of some health issues in my journey to find self love, and I think this book enhanced my discovery.

A quick read on the power of positive affirmations (the audio version is only 3 hours long). This book was written over 30 years ago, during my college years. It feels dated, but I enjoyed revisiting that time. I found the affirmation part inspiring, as it certainly can't hurt to go forth in life with a positive attitude! As a result, I will be adding positive affirmations to my daily gratitude exercises. However, I chose to ignore the discussions tying various illness to various mental states. That part is total hogwash (nice try Louise), but a fun trip down memory lane.

All right, so I'm extremely skeptical of this sort of thing, and I don't actually thing she's right. Well, not in the extreme she takes it, however. I really don't think everyone who gets hurt or sick in any way whatsoever can cure it through positive thinking.
*However*. I do think there's a part of this that is right and helpful. I think that our way of thinking has much more power than we think (as evidenced by the placebo effect, among other things). I really enjoyed all the exercises she has in this book (I love books with exercises to do in general), and I really think they have helped me. So, 4 stars it is!
