Well! I haven't read one of these books in a very long time, and it was really nice to go back to Pick Ax and visit. I love all these characters especially the cats, the cute little mystery he can't quite figure out, but that darn cat gets it! Hopefully there won't be so much time in between my rating of this book and the next book.

I am listening to this on audio book. It's on tape which is a little less clear to listen to. I don't have a CD player in my car. So far I am enjoying it - I am about 1 and a half tapes in. Koko and YumYum are entertaining - for cats....
Update:
I finished this book on my way home from work last night. It really is the perfect type of book to listen to in the car. The cast of characters is well written and interesting and the plot is just suspenseful enough to make you want to keep listening, but not so complicated that you miss things while you are driving. The main character and all his friends are a little bit out of the 1950's with their "that would be swell" kind of dialogue and attitudes, but sometimes that is what you need after a long day at work.

Looks like I have a new (old) cozy series to enjoy! Koko and Yum Yum are great co-conspirators for Qwilleran, and I liked the main character, a newspaper man in the little town of Pickax. The mystery was sufficiently complex and unique, full of little twists that kept me guessing. The characters are full of life and little quirks that make them seem real, too. One of the only downsides for me was that it was hard to keep the characters straight, but that could be because a good chunk of this book was read at a trade show, with plenty of interruptions. I suppose it's time to allow one more cat-mystery series into my life. (I'm also curious to know if the Short and Tall Tales Qwill collected throughout are the stories that appear in Braun's collection of the same name. If so, that makes me more likely to pick it up!)

When the local baker dies under mysterious circumstances, Qwill knows somethings awry. Was it his young wife, whom he left a hefty inheritance to, his ungrateful children, or some foundation that wanted all of his money. Koko won't stop acting strange so Qwill knows he has a case and won't stop until he finds out who did it.

I have wanted to read books in this series for a long time. Even though I predicted the end, I enjoyed the story and setting.

All the “Cat Who…” books are pretty formulaic. A reader of mysteries would figure out the villain pretty early on. Braun has a tendency to take her readers to the last couple of pages then “revealing all” because Q and Koko have figured it out. Little to no character development but they’re a quick read to pass time.
