It's hard to square this workmanlike bildungsroman with her electric follow-up, Hex. I can't see any similarities. How did she make the leap??

Almost a DNF, but I'm stubborn AF. Definitely do not recomend. Incredibly long and boring chapters. Flat characters, no plot, didn't feel anything as I read it (and I read to feel something). Just no.

1.5 stars? I definitely would NOT have finished this book if not for the covid19 isolation's book scarcity!

This a ton more literary than the cover would have you believe. Is Norway the place??

Though a bit messy sometimes with maybe 4-5 too many partially-developed characters, I found this book absolutely delightful.

I would give this book a 2.5 because it redeemed itself at the end, and I also really enjoyed the book's setting. However, I found much of the narration to be dull, and the two main characters (Frances and Yasha) didn't seem to be developed to the point that they should have been. Overall, I would call this a cute book that deals with the ideas of life, love, change, and death; I just think it could have gone a bit deeper.

This was ok- a little weird. The characters weren't fully developed, so it was hard to care about them.

Somehow, though The Sunlit Night has been on my to-read shelf for an age, I didn't quite realize it was a love story before I marched myself down to the library and checked it out and took it home. So, full disclosure, it's a love story.

Although there were parts of The Sunlit Night that I loved - particularly the Norwegian colloquialisms, the imagery of the fjords in peak summer, the lack of neat edges - the book on the whole seems underwhelming mostly due to its aforementioned status as a love story (not my jam), and also because the one character in the love story (but not the other!) is not yet eighteen which kind of wigs me out a bit. At times the characters seemed one dimensional, though the author does make up for this by keeping the plot away from cliché. Two stars. Would recommend to those looking for a fluffy love story to read as the winter draws to a close.
