What a pleasure to reread a childhood favorite and to find it holds up well. Louisa May Alcott was ahead of her time in encouraging the education of young women, equality among the sexes, healthful eating and getting exercise, developing character. Lovely novel still holds up beautifully.

This was fine...
It could have done with being shorter as it did put me in a reading slump. It was also VERY preachy and moral. There is also a lot of 'traditional' roles for the boys and girls which angered me. There is also racial stereotypes (and just out and out racism) that were very 'of the time' that are very inappropriate and uncomfortable now.
The characters are lovable, and the story is fun when not being too moral. There are many similarities between the plot of this and Little Women. But this didn't have a rambunctious Jo to fight against the silly traditions and societal rules.
One thing that Alcott does so well is create loveable characters and cosy familial relationships. Without that i am sad to say that this book would have been a bit of a dud. But its Alcott's charm that keeps it alive.

In many ways I liked this book more than "Little Women".

Reread 2022, my previous review was exactly right about everything except wow! Even more racism than I remembered! Great

I liked this book a good deal, I think. It wasn't quite what I expected, but it was engaging and delightful. The love Rose showed for her family and Uncle was quite touching, and the care the family has for each other is evident through every page.

This book felt kinda Anne-of-Green-Gables-y but in a very very good way and I loved Rose's character so much. Honestly the entire vibe was wonderful! Warning that there is definitely some period typical racism present against Asians but more in the description than in actual events. Beyond that it was a fun little read and I'm totally going to be reading Rose in Bloom after this.

Sadly this did not hold up for me as a re-read, though I loved it as a girl. I think I'd prefer the sequel Rose in Bloom. At the time 8 Cousins was supposed to be a feminist novel because the author criticizes corsets and the restricted past-times of "society" girls. And this is all true and all good. Yet the heroine Rose is still just plain insipid and watery weak, and her uncle, supposed to be such a rescuer from the sexist mores of the day, is so dictatorial and Rose listens to him. Blech. Clearly what makes Little Women so great is Jo. And even Amy provides some spice of naughtiness. 8 Cousins is like Little Women with Meg or Beth as heroine.

Suka sekali buku ini. Kisah anak lelaki yang bersemangat dengan gadis manis ditengahnya. Akhirnya Rose akan menikah dengan siapa ya?
Kapan nih buku sekuelnya terbit? Atau gak bakal terbit?

Almost gave this book 3 stars instead of 4, but I think that was mostly Alcott fatigue - reading all her works is great, but she does have a few favourite themes, so the novelty wears off a bit.
This one was wholesome and sweet, not super preachy (or maybe I'm becoming desensitised), but not very funny either.

This is probably my second favorite Louisa May Alcott book (after Little Women.) At least it was when I was a kid. I remember envying Rose all those boy cousins; it seemed as though it would be so much fun to have so many built in boy playmates. And it’s yet another orphan story – I do have an “orphans” shelf on goodreads as I love books about orphans. I don’t remember this as a depressing or somber tale at all though.
On another note: I pulled out my copy of the book, and I’m very excited as I must still have my mother’s copy: have one published the year (1927) she was twelve; I read this for the first time when I was a few years younger than that.
