I learned a lot more about WWI, and womenโ€™s roles during that war. The book had heartbreakingly loveable characters, and a keep you guessing story.

This was my first Kate Quinn book at it did not disappoint! It's a multi-layered historical fiction about a female spy ring in France, during WWI. The story is told in two storylines: one in 1916, when the spy ring was active, and the other in 1947, following the second world War. It is a fantastic story that was well-researched and well-told.

This was my first Kate Quinn novel, and I am kicking myself for waiting so long. I LOVED this one!

The plot & pace was perfect, & there really is something for everyone - historical fiction all about a female spy network, a suspenseful mystery, with a little romance sprinkled in. High stakes & even higher emotions made this such a page turner.

These are the only things that kept this from being a 5โ˜† read -
1. There were a lot of French names, places & language sprinkled in that made it a tiny bit hard to follow, but the reading along with the audiobook helped tremendously with that!
And 2. I was slightly more invested in one perspective/timeline than the other.

I still highly recommend this one!

Finishing this book post 2024 election was more difficult than I thought. But the story is interesting and the characters are wonderfully written. Another great historical fiction from Kate Quinn.

I should really stop reading Kate Quinn. I keep trying to like her books, but I'm consistently bored by them. I think it's because this and the other two I read (The Rose Code and The Diamond Eye) are all set around the same time - during, between, or after one of the world wars. I'm guessing this is her niche - world war historical fiction. I don't love the historical fiction around this time in general. I also have found myself failing to invest in any of the characters. I think I like the story arcs, but I don't feel connected to the people in the stories because I feel her storytelling is flat.

Unfortunately, I have one book of hers left to read - The Phoenix Crown, which I won in a Goodreads giveaway. At least this one is cowritten with Janie Chang. Maybe that'll be the one that I like. Nonetheless, I'll wait a while before jumping back into Kate Quinn.
