4.5 stars tbh. Loved the writing and the plot. It did drag a little in the middle.

Misery is the story of a middle aged author who has a car accident in snowy Colorado and is "rescued" by his biggest fan, Annie Wilkes. In true King style, the characterisation is excellent. Stephen King's power is in bringing his character's to life, and this is just what he did with Misery. The narrative, as I've come to expect from King, is like being inside the character's head, warts and all, so that they become someone in whose future the reader becomes engrossed.

Exactly what I expected from a younger Stephen King - this is one of the King Classics which I have only just gotten around to reading, and I'm glad I did.

Personally, I like King's mid-career work, the huge tomes that take weeks to read, but this was my first read of 2020 and one I thoroughly enjoyed simply because it is exactly what I knew it would be. If you're a fan of the thriller genre, Misery is a great choice. It will make you wince, laugh and care about a fictional character in a way only King and few others can achieve.

*EDIT AFTER INITIAL REVIEW* 5 ⭐️: alright, so my initial complaints have morphed into complete obsession. I have hardly stopped thinking about this book since I read it. The suspense, the disturbing attacks, all of it are haunting me. And I feel like I cannot in good conscience leave a book that stays with me like that at a 3 star rating. Gg Stephen, my bad

ORIGINAL REVIEW/RATING: 3 ⭐️ This book was so disorienting. Even now, I can’t tell if I liked it or not. I couldn’t give it less than three stars, because I did gobble it up in a day and a half, and the anticipation/suspense was incredible. But I also couldn’t give it 5, or even four stars because of how lengthy and scrambled some parts felt. I know that it is meant to put you in the headspace Paul was in throughout, but there were times it didn’t feel intentional. I still maintain that it’s worth the read for anyone who likes suspense and can handle some gore.
