These women surely should have been honored just like the men. It is not too late for our Nation to bestow the awards!

Finally crammed enough time into my life to finish this one out. Having always read non-fiction military and history of the Philippines I had never heard much about these women. Recommended to me by a fellow nurse coworker a few years back. Now I am fully intrigued by these women and desire to travel and see what these women saw in the tunnels.

I loved this book. I didn't know the first thing about WWII in the Pacific. The topic fascinated me. I read it cover to cover without picking up any other books. The women in the book are heroic in a mundane way under extraordinary circumstances.
The writing was fluid,fact-filled, well researched, and compelling.

So the history of American women in combat seems to be: there have always been American women serving in combat roles, but because these roles were largely unofficial, they were never able to access any benefits, formal or informal, that came along with being combat veterans. Hopefully that is changing, but it does make me wonder how many stories like these nurses' experiences have already been lost to history.

Strong start with some really interesting information. Heroic tales of strong women and our nations soldiers. Middle to end of book just okay for me.

Inspirational story about the US Army and Navy nurses left behind in the Philippines when the Americans evacuated at the beginning of WWII; their lives as prisoners of war and the care they provided to other internees, and how our government failed to acknowledge their contributions at the end of the war.

An amazing book. Not an easy or light read but a story that deserves to be told. These women were heroes and the fact their story isn't well known is a travesty.

A really fantastic story about a group of nurses who deserved so much more recognition when they were alive. I had the pleasure of hearing the author present her research on interviews with nurses during the pandemic, which led me to the book. Although my experience during COVID didn’t come close to the combat and imprisonment these nurses experienced, there are certainly a lot of similarities to our stories. Thank you to Beth for bringing these women’s stories to light, I will now never forget the Angels of Bataan.
