I really enjoyed this book. It wasn't a subject I knew much about (flu epidemic ) but was a great historical fiction book. It's more than a story about the flu - great moral questions as well. It's a complex story, but not one where you feel like you're drowning reading it.

I'm just going to float this 10-year-old review for a very timely read.
A few years ago, I read John Barry's non-fiction account of the 1918 flu pandemic. This novel about a fictional town (logging community, actually) which quarantined itself to keep the flu out, draws on accounts of other towns actually taking such precautions.
The imaginative combination of various historical events (the flu, unions, the Great War, suffrage, etc.) and complex characters (although it's pretty clear who the "good guys" are most of the time) make this worth reading.

Well, seeing as how I didn't really know what to expect from this book, it was pretty good! I think it was very realistic and probable. This small town quarantines itself to prevent the Spanish flu from getting to them. This of course leads to issues within and without the community. Interesting plot, seamless perspective changes, lovely characters. Pretty good book, just not my cup of tea I guess. I never really got excited about it. Just a lot of small buildups to no climax.

Interesting book. It is the pick for a book club I have just recently joined. A town in the woods of Washington state in the nineteen teens quarantines itself against the flu. Along the way tensions erupt when soliders appear in the woods. Stories of union strikes and concientious objectors fill in the backgrounds of characters.

Really liked this book. The quiet narration and entrance into a compelling story had me from the beginning. So much variety of character and a great look into real happenings in history that aren't often written about. Author's imagination and engagement with the series of events told a great story about who humans really are and what we are willing to do, how far we will go if pressed or threatened. The end left me feeling somehow appropriately bereft, too.

Some of my family members died in the flu epidemic of 1918, so I've always wanted to learn more about it. This was an interesting book, and the author did a good job of showing the types of things that might happen when a healthy town tries to keep out the unhealthy, and the difficult choices that might result. Although I am a progressive person, the installation of characters with 21st century progressive values into an early 20th century didn't quite ring true. Nonetheless, it's worth a read.

Great writing; poignant characters and a fabulous story. It doesn't get any better than that.

interesting, but boring. what a conundrum. another book I've been waiting to read came in the mail so I abandoned this one.

At one point near the end, the main character was thinking something along the lines of "I can't believe it has been only a few days since everything was normal..." and instead of being sad for him, all that I could think was gee, I wish I had only been hearing this story for that long. I don't know what made it so boring, but it was.
